Review #1: Great Product! 2009-04-22 Love these ecopods, they do exactly what they say they do, allow you to use your own coffee and have all the advantages of the Senseo pods, proper strength and creme. I tried the "duck" and hated it, it leaked and I couldn't control the strength or achieve a creme.
Review #2: Cancels out benefit of Senseo 2009-04-10 After trying various pre packaged pods for my Senseo and not really being happy with any of them (not strong enough), I was happy to find what I thought to be a great solution to my problem, i.e. make my own pods!
But after pulling out my coffee, grinding the beans to the right granularity (you have to pay attention here!), carefully putting the grounds into the eco pod (it still always spills, making a mess), snapping pod together, putting coffee back, I had to stop and ask myself what the point of the Senseo was in the first place: EASY, quick, mess free, but mediocre coffee. I don't think it pretends to be anything more than that, and it does that quite well.
Introducing this customized pod business into the equation completely negates the whole reason for the Senseo in the first place!
In addition to that, I still could not pack enough coffee into the Ecopod to make a strong enough cup for my tastes, so it was no better than my Timothy espresso pods (which are pretty darn good if you haven't tried them, mostly because they simply have more volume of coffee in their pod), but ALSO was a huge pain to make/clean up after, etc.
So there really is no point to these imo. If you are going to go to all the trouble, you might as well just stick with a real espresso machine or a real coffee machine.
Also, not sure what is so environmentally friendly about a pod made from petrochemicals, in plastic wrapping? I think the traditional pods with the paper filters are a lot more enviro friendly if you ask me, since I put them in my compost pile and they break down very quickly.
The product itself works as advertised, and costs less than $10, so it gets a couple of stars for that, but stick with the pods if you ask me.
One more note: if you like strong coffee like me, this is definitely a no go. I always use TWO of the normal pods (either the dark roast or the Sumatra) and hit SINGLE SERVING. Comes out about right for me. Then I tap the single serving again briefly and hit the power button, so the water comes out for about 1.5 servings. Perfect! This method isn't possible with the ecopod of course, so another negative...sorry!
Review #3: good filter 2009-04-10 I really like this one since it can let me fill the coffee powder I really like.
Review #4: Works Really Well 2009-03-23 I've used the pod for 8 months now and I was very happy to finally be able to use my other coffees. The pad has endured very well, considering I stuffed it more than once.
As I've used up all of my ground coffee and am buying whole beans, the current trick has been finding the right grind setting. I know it's not very fine grind (as in Starbucks Turkish grind), because it takes 2 pushes of the 8 oz button to fill an 8oz mug. I ended up barely tamping down the very fine coffee to get a better water flow through the 1.5 tablespoon capacity pod; the coffee was still okay and the frothy head returned. The grind can't be course either as the coffee will only turn out to be coffee water, so I'm guessing it should be above very fine. I know the Senseo coffee grind is probably a little above fine, but wonder if a different coffee has to be finer in order to get a full flavor from the coffee.
Review #5: Great Buy 2009-03-21 New Improved Brown Ecopad, the Refillable Coffee Filter for the SenseoWorks great, allows you to use any coffee.. follow instructions and don't overfill..lots less expensive than buying Senseo pads.. just rinse it out between uses and every few days or so, I run it through the dishwasher. |
