I had the hardcover of this book, and broke the binding, thus loosing some well-used recipes! So I had to get the ringbound edition!
It is one of my favorite books for cooking. Along side the "Staple" Joy of Cooking!

I got this book for Christmas from my Mother and I love it. It has everything in it. It is the first book I go for when I can't find anything to fix for Dinner. A great Cookbook for a Mother to give a Daughter.

Lots of contemporary recipes, with a lot of the old classics. Easy to use.Has a section fro holiday recipes and holiday gift ideas.

I'm just learning how to cook (and saying goodbye to the days of frozen meals and cereal for dinner) and I love this cookbook - the separate sections are fantastic, and the comprehensive index at the back makes finding particular recipes easy. I also like the substitutions and "equivalents" list, and the pictures of different cuts of meat were extremely helpful (coming from a person who had never purchased meat from the butcher before).
I highly recommend that three-ring binder edition as well - it makes it much easier to use while you're wrist-deep in flour and egg whites!

Having lost my old reliable copy of this book (an older edition) to a flood, I was at first reluctant to buy. But I am so glad that I did. This new edition is better organized -- colored edge tabs and good indeces. The photos are clear and the recipies that I have tried were easy to follow and turned out very well. As with all bound books, there is the slight problem of avoiding damage to the binding and smearing dirty hands on the pages. Perhaps a ring-bound version would be a bit better. The pages are glossy, however, so that marks usually wipe off. The "cooking basics" information in the front of the book is also very useful -- equipment, food storage, ingredients, nutrition, seasonings, technques. Another good feature is that each tabbed section comes with its own index. This makes it easier to find items in that section without going back to the main index. No space is wasted. Even the back of the hard front and back covers are filled with Equivalents and Emergency Substitutions respectively. |
